Product and safety information

Physical and chemical properties

Expandable Polystyrene (EPS) is polymer made of styrene containing pentane as blowing agent. StyroChem EPS is supplied in the form of spherical beads in 1100 kg octabins.

Health hazards

The product is not classified as hazardous to health in EU countries. However, it is advisable to avoid inhaling blowing agents which are released during processing.

Fire and explosion hazards

The blowing agent may form an explosive compound with air (1.3 - 7.8 vol. %). It is therefore extremely important that EPS be stored in a properly ventilated location. As a fire control measure, fire walls should be used to isolate storage and processing areas from each other and from other areas. The generation of static electricity should be prevented. Please note that when EPS burns, large amounts of smoke and soot are formed.

Fire fighting

Normal media for fire fighting; CO2, dry chemicals, foam and fine water spray.

Storage

Store in a properly ventilated cool location (below 20oC), away from combustible materials. To achieve the best performance of the product, it is recommended that it should not be stored for more than one month.

Handling

The use of protective gloves is recommended. During processing, some blowing agent and small quantities of other volatile substances are released into the air. These should be removed from the working area by local air extraction where necessary.

Waste disposal

When possible, waste products should be recovered for recycling. Waste from which the blowing agent has been removed may be taken to landfill sites in accordance with the waste disposal regulations. Always contact your local authorities to ensure that disposal methods comply with local regulations.

Recycling

Clean waste material is recyclable using modern recycling methods.
