What is EPS
EPS (Expandable Polystyrene) is a polymer made of styrene containing pentane as a blowing agent and comes in the form of spherical beads. EPS is used as raw material for various EPS products in construction, packaging and many special applications due to its versatile nature.
EPS products consist of a foam structure of closed cells containg air. This gives them excellent thermal insulation and shock absorbing properties. Typically, 98 % by volume of the product is air. EPS products are cost effective, safe to use and environmentally friendly. They do not contain any CFC´s or HCFC´s.
The beads are processed into products first by pre-expansion with steam to reach the required product density. Then, after a maturing period in a silo, the pre-foamed beads are further expanded and fused together with steam in a mould. The shape of the moulded EPS depends on the end use.
For construction applications the EPS is normally in the form of a block which is then cut into sheets or other shapes for insulation purposes.
For packaging, the EPS is moulded into the shape of the final product e.g. impact protection for TV´s, computers or other delicate equipment.
